Koroma double clinches win as Carshalton continue impressive form

Carshalton Athletic’s fine run of form continued at the weekend as an eighth win in 10 games keeps the club firmly in the Bostik South promotion hunt.

Two goals by striker Omar Koroma gave the Robins a 2-1 win over mid-table Thamesmead Town last Saturday and now means the club sit only three points behind league leaders Lewes.

And despite describing the victory as “scrappy,” club captain Paris Hamilton-Downes believes its vitally important he and his teammates keep up their high standards.

“We’ve spoken about needing to go into every game putting in the same effort, regardless of where our opponents are in the league,” Hamilton-Downes said.

“We did that against Thamesmead but I think our tempo dropped a little and the game became scrappy.  They made it hard for us but we’ve managed to get over the line.”

Carshalton started brightly against Town but had to wait 22 minutes before breaking the deadlock.

Tommy Bradford was felled inside Town’s box and Koroma coolly converted the spot-kick.

Cleans sheets have proven elusive for Carshalton during their impressive run however and they conceded just after half-time as Laurent Mendy nodded Town level from close range.

But Koroma was found by a Jordan Cheadle cross on 58 minutes and he headed home his 10th of the season in Robins red.

“Everyone’s been digging in every week and we stick to our philosophy too,” added Hamilton-Downes when asked about the club’s fine run of form.

“Pete (Adeniyi, manger) and Keith (Boanas, coach) have tweaked things here and there but, as the results show, there’s been no real need for us to change much whether that’s at training or on matchday.”

Carshalton’s next match is a trip to Herne Bay on Saturday and their opponents are the only club to take three points off the Robins since the start of November.

Hamilton-Downes concluded: “We’ll be really up for the game but it’s always tough to go to Herne Bay and it’ll probably still be freezing cold weather, so we’ll prepare well and stick to our game plan.”

Carshalton Athletic now travel to Herne Bay on Saturday 3rd March in a bid to continue their promotion hunt.
