WATCH: Harlequins Foundation deliver Girls Only Rugby Programme in local London schools

Launched in 2016, the Harlequins Foundation delivers a six week, girls only rugby programme to local schools with the drive to increase participation in the sport, especially with the Women’s World Cup fast approaching.

The SWITCH programme aims to grow the women’s game by shattering stereotypes through engaging drills and workshops.

These fun-filled sessions are delivered by female coaches and provide girls the opportunity to try a new sport in an inclusive environment.

We went to see the programme in action at Brentford School for Girls.

When asked to describe the programme in three words, year 9 students Eshal and Zia said: “Fun, different and exciting!”

Zia said: “It is a new way for us girls to experience another different sport.”

Commencing in August, the home Women’s Rugby World Cup is set to be the biggest celebration of women’s rugby ever, with the tournament already selling 50% more tickets than the 2021 World Cup in New Zealand.

It is a real opportunity to showcase the best players and personalities of the women’s game, with the likes of Ilona Maher, USA Olympian and social media sensation gracing stadiums around the United Kingdom.

The Harlequins Foundation hopes to build on the momentum of the Guinness Women’s Six Nations and Women’s World Cup year and inspire the next generation of players and coaches.

Jade, Harlequins Foundation Regional Development Manager said: “Our mission is really simple, it is about getting as many girls into rugby as possible.”
