David Carr believes Streatham Redskins can prove they belong at the top this weekend

David Carr wants Streatham Redskins to show they belong at the top when they host Wightlink Raiders on Sunday.

After five consecutive wins, Redskins find themselves leading English National Ice Hockey League South One ahead of two games this weekend, when they travel to Cardiff today before facing Wightlink.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s clash with one of the title contenders, assistant captain Carr feels the Redskins have an opportunity to prove their worth.

“The games against the bigger teams, they don’t define your season but they’re a chance to prove whether you belong at the top or not,” he said.

“If we play well and compete against Wightlink, it’s good news for us.”

Sunday’s game has an added incentive for the Redskins as they will face one of their former players, Steve Balmer.

“Steve did well for us, he scored quite a few,” Carr said.

“He’s quick and he’s skilful and he’ll have a point to prove.”

Despite beating them 4-2 last weekend at the Streatham Ice Arena, Carr feels Cardiff Devils will prove just as much of a threat as Wightlink because of their home advantage.

“Because the game’s away, it’s probably going to be just as difficult as the Wightlink game,” he said.

“I think Cardiff, traditionally, don’t travel that well. When we play them at their place they’ll be stronger.”

While there is naturally added pressure on the Redskins now they are top of the league, Carr feels it will not hinder their performances this weekend.

“It’s so early in the season, so it’s more of a good morale boost for the team and for the fans to see the team at the top of the league,” he said.

“I don’t think it adds too much pressure. It’s good pressure, nothing to worry about.”
