Lily Miyazaki triumphed in the battle of the Brits to stun Jodie Burrage and progress to the last 16 on a thrilling day of action at the LTA’s Lexus Surbiton Trophy.
The duo are both coached by Craig Veal, but it was the lower-ranked Miyazaki – who is supported by the LTA’s Pro Access Programme – who triumphed in the south-west London sunshine.
The British No.7 beat her friend-turned-rival – who is supported by the LTA’s PSP Programme – 6-3 2-6 4-6 to set up a mouth-watering match against fellow compatriot Eden Silva.
Earlier in the day, Harriet Dart showed huge heart to battle back from a set down and beat Magali Kempen to book her place in the last 16.
The British No.4, who is also supported by the LTA’s PSP Programme, was on the back foot after losing the first set to her Belgian rival but showed remarkable spirit to win the game 6-2 4-6 3-6.
Elsewhere, Emily Webley-Smith suffered a straight sets loss at the hands of Elizabeth Mandlik.
The American stormed to a convincing 6-3 6-0 victory to book her place in the round of 16.
Naiktha Bains also suffered a defeat, losing 6-3 6-4 to Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer.
The British No.9 fought hard to stay in the match but eventually fell to the world No.89.
Seventh seed Oceane Dodin defeated Maia Lumsden 7-5 3-6 6-3 after a closely-fought contest.
The 25-year-old from Glasgow looked like she had grabbed a foothold in the match after pushing Dodin to the limit in the first set before winning the second.
But her French rival regrouped and took the third set to advance.
In the women’s doubles, Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls beat Quinn Gleason and Elixane Lechemia in straight sets to progress to the semi-finals.
The 7-6 (3) 7-5 victory means they will now play their compatriot Emily Appleton and her German partner Julia Lohoff, who recorded an upset victory over second seeds Viktoria Hruncakova and Tereza Mihalikova.
Katie Swan and Australian partner Priscilla Hon went out after losing to Silva and her Australian partner Olivia Gadecki in a three-set thriller.
On the men’s side, two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray advanced to the quarter-finals with a straight sets win against China’s Bu Yunchaokete.
But it was heartbreak for Ryan Peniston, who was beaten in straight sets by Australian Jason Kubler.
The defeat means Peniston, who is supported by the LTA’s Pro Access Programme, will miss out on the chance to play his first competitive match against Murray, who now faces Kubler on Friday.
Elsewhere, Liam Broady and Jonny O’Mara were in action in the men’s doubles and cruised to a comfortable victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic and Juncheng Shang.
