Surrey missed out on the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup despite a five-wicket win at The Oval against Glamorgan, who also failed to qualify.
The hosts raced to their target of 267 thanks to 80 off 57 balls from Will Jacks and 68 from captain Rory Burns.
But with both Somerset and Essex winning their games elsewhere, Surrey missed out on a top three finish of the Southern Division.
Glamorgan’s 266-8 was built on a score of 98 off 136 balls from 21-year-old Connor Brown, playing just his third 50-over match.
On his side’s play throughout the tournament, Surrey captain Rory Burns said: “When we were on, we were on and when we were off, we were really off and that was the story of our competition.
“The last couple of years, we’ve managed to sneak through doing that but this year we haven’t quite got there.”
Standout Glamorgan batsman Brown said: “I told myself just to bat the 50 overs and see where I got to, I tried to play selfless cricket, but unfortunately I skied one to mid-wicket.
“It was nice to score a few on only my third white-ball game for Glamorgan, two more would have been nice but ultimately it’s about the team and we didn’t really show up.”
Surrey had the upper hand in the match after just two of the scheduled 100 overs had been bowled by claiming two wickets for no runs.
Surrey’s accurate bowlers were mostly on top thereafter, with legendary South African fast bowler Morne Morkel (2-39) getting his first wicket at the Kia Oval since joining the side in April on a Kolpak contract, meaning he will not be classed as an overseas player.
Morkel and Rikki Clarke (3-49) were the pick of the Surrey attack.
Colin Ingram (44), Graham Wagg (35 off 18 balls) and Kiran Carlson (33) all gave the Glamorgan’s innings impetus but got out at key stages meaning the side could never capitalise on their partnerships.
In contrast, Surrey’s emphatic start, thanks to England under-19 star Jacks, saw them well ahead of the run-rate throughout their innings, cruising to victory in just the 41st over.
Jacks proved that he has an experienced head on top of young shoulders as he tallied up 8-4s and 2-6s to reach his half century by playing shots off of both his front and back feet.
An unbeaten sixth wicket stand of 51 between two more of Surrey’s young stock in the 20-year-old pairing of Ollie Pope (31) and Sam Curran (22) took their side to a comfortable victory.
A fourth win in seven completed games was not enough to take Surrey through to the finals for the first time in four years, while Glamorgan finished a lacklustre campaign with only one win.
Glamorgan will be hoping for a better start to their T20 campaign with their two overseas stars, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja, now eligible to play.
