Asha Philip claimed bronze for Great Britain in the 60m at the European Indoor Athletics Championship in Glasgow.
The Kingston University graduate headed into the competition as defending champion but the gold medal was won by Poland’s Ewa Swoboda in 7.09 seconds.
The silver medal went to the Netherlands’ Dafne Schippers in 7.14, just pipping Philip by one hundredth of a second, while Herne Hill Harrier Kristal Awuah finished in fourth place just 0.001 seconds behind Philip.
Speaking to British Athletics, Philip said: “I’m so grateful that I came back here with a medal.
“Obviously, I wanted to win gold and retain my title but that’s what happens in the final – it was a very messy race but I still kept my composure and was able to get a medal.
“I was so hurt to know that I had taken that the bronze away from Kristal.
“We both had the exact same time and I was the fortunate one to get the bronze medal but I could just see the future is so bright and she’s a talented girl.”
Awuah was making her senior international debut for GB and recorded a new personal best of 7.15 seconds in the final.
The 19-year-old was amazed with how much she has improved this season, after just missing out on the bronze medal.
“I’ve really learnt a lot from it, I’ve got a PB so it’s good moving forward to the outdoor season,” Awuah told British Athletics.
“I’m amazed with how much I’ve improved over my 60m, so I’m looking forward to improving a bit more, getting quicker and getting stronger.”
Jamie Webb, a teacher at Harris Academy in South Norwood, secured a silver medal in the 800m setting a personal best of one minute 47.13 seconds.
While Adelle Tracey, who attended St Mary’s University, made it through her 800m heat on the first day of the championships but missed out on a place in the final when she finished fifth in the semi-final.
