University student Cam Gutteridge upset the odds by beating Olympic silver medallist Emma Pooley to win the Brompton World Championship London Final by just 3 seconds.
Gutteridge, 20, bought his first Brompton bicycle only a year ago after being inspired by the championship of 2017.
But that didn’t stop him beating the other 549 riders in the final with his time of 27:19 being just enough to beat out Pooley’s 27:22 in a tense finish (pictured above).
Also falling short on July 28 was multiple-time winner Mark Emsley.
The BWC championship is a fun event in central London for both riders and spectators with no lycra or sports gear permitted.
The dress code is strictly smart and awards are given to the best-dressed.
The Brompton bike was created by Sir Andrew Ritchie in 1976 and is made for big cities.
It has certainly stood the test of time as well as the 16km circuit.
Brompton’s CEO Will Butler-Adams OBE described the atmosphere as “mental”. He also spoke of the fortunate weather and praised the most recent winner.
