Ellis at the double as Rosslyn Park make it five in a row

Wharfedale 12 Rosslyn Park 17

Skipper Hugo Ellis scored two tries as Rosslyn Park won for a fifth game in a row and closed the gap on their title rivals in the National League One.

Ellis crossed the whitewash twice in the first half before Joe Ajuwa added a third before the break.

In contrast to an exciting first half, no points were scored after the break and Park will be disappointed not to come away with a bonus point.

The win means Rosslyn are now two points behind second placed Coventry and four points behind leaders Ealing Trailfinders who have a game in hand after their match this weekend was called off.

The visitors were the dominant side in the first half however it was Wharfedale who took an early lead when flanker Dan Solomi touched down within the first five minutes which fly-half Jamie Guy converted.

Park responded a few minutes later when Ellis touched down after Rosslyn’s pack drove over the visitors try line leaving fly half Scott Sneddon with a difficult kick which he failed to convert.

Three minutes later Ellis stormed through the host’s defence to put his side ahead on 18 minutes which Sneddon converted.

Wharfedale responded and drew level following a good move up the right which released flanker James Tyson who touched down, however the host’s missed the conversion.

Moments later, Ajuwa received the ball from a scrum and the winger burst over the whitewash to give Park a 17-12 lead on 33 minutes.

Wharfedale were dominant after the break and kept the visitors in their own half for about 20 minutes, however some well organised and committed defending from Rosslyn prevented the hosts from scoring.

Park’s best chance of the half came when centre Paul Mackey looked to have been put through, only for the ball to have been knocked forward.

Both defence’s stood firm and Park were able to hold out for the victory.
