Merton Council’s leader is not expecting any major Labour landslides tonight.
Stephen Alambritis, leader of Merton Borough Council since 2010, is focusing on maintaining the party’s position and voter turnout.
Mr Alambritis said: “I think a good night for Labour would be to hold positions as well as making some major inroads into Wimbledon and holding onto the two wards that we have.”
He added that all parties have had a resurgence in Merton, with the exception of UKIP that was ebbing away.
“What I always look out for at these occasions is turnout. It’s important for democracy, I always congratulate people just on voting – obviously I want them to vote Labour – but if they vote another way, it’s still good they’ve taken part in democracy,” he said.
Labour have 36 seats in Merton, with 60 seats up for grabs tonight.
