A Waterloo Station sound art piece brought a mix of field recordings, music excerpts, and short lessons on London’s musical history to the ears of commuters changing between the Jubilee and Northern lines in July.
The mock radio broadcast sampled genre-distinctive drum breaks, soothed travellers with traditional Arabic folk singing, and implored them to pause and breathe.
Artist Joe Namy’s soundscape in the capital’s fourth-busiest underground station was commissioned by TfL’s Art on the Underground programme with contributions from three London-based creative organisations.
South West Londoner asked these organisations, as well as commuters, their views on the Waterloo installation and on programmes like Art on the Underground showcasing free art in London’s busiest public spaces.
