A shocking video released by PETA, and narrated by Paloma Faith, reveals the appalling conditions in which animals destined to be made into fur clothing are kept.
Foxes with skinless paws forced to live beside the rotting remains of their caged companions and a mink with head wound so severe that its brain is visible are just two of the stomach-churning scenes in the video.
Emaciated animals living in cramped conditions with weeping sores also feature in the video which exposes the conditions in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and the United States, among others, which are branded as ‘Origin Assured’.
Armed with this exposé PETA is now calling on Harvey Nichols, which recently abandoned its decade-long fur-free policy in order to start selling ‘Origin Assured’ fur, to rejoin other UK department stores in banning fur.
“The ‘Origin Assured’ fur label serves no other purpose than to make people feel better about supporting one of the cruellest industries in existence”, said PETA Director Mimi Bekhechi.
“PETA is calling on Harvey Nichols to stop misleading its customers and reinstate its fur-free policy – permanently.”
The ‘Origin Assured’ label was created by the International Fur Federation following years of plummeting sales.
While the label attempts to reassure the public about the treatment of animals raised and killed for fur PETA aims to highlight their plight.
As Paloma said in the video: “All fur is the product of extreme cruelty and abuse of animals, that’s why I always choose faux fur.
“With so many extraordinary alternatives on the market, there’s just no excuse for tearing the fur off an animal’s back.”
