Police are launching a murder investigation following a fatal stabbing at a Kingston nightclub in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Jamie Sanderson, 20, from Southall, West London, was stabbed in the vicinity of the groundfloor cloakroom toilets at Oceana, Clarence Street.

Emergency services were called to the club shortly before 3.30am and the victim was taken to hospital. However, he died en route.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Mark Lawson said: “I am appealing for anyone who was in the Oceana nightclub at around the time of this incident to come forward and speak to my team.”

A man, 22, has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in custody at a South London police station.

Oceana nightclub Kingston posted a statement on its website yesterday.

It said: “Oceana’s security team apprehended a male alleged to be involved in the incident and handed him to the police.

“The venue, which is the UK’s busiest nightclub, is equipped with 90 CCTV cameras and has recently installed an ID capture scanning system, is working closely and will continue to work closely with the police to bring those involved to justice.

“The thoughts of everyone at Oceana are with the families of those involved at this time.”

Councillor Derek Osbourne, Leader of Kingston Council, says they will give full support to the police in bringing to justice the person or persons responsible.

“This is a shocking incident and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends.

“We will act on any lessons to be learned from this sad episode, including a call to review the licensing of this local venue.”

The last fatal stabbing in a Kingston nightclub occured in June 2007 when Mikey Brown, 23, was attacked in The Works on St James Road.

It resulted in a 600 member strong ‘Boycott The Works Kingston After Stabbing’ Facebook group and metal detectors for the club’s security, a measure taken by Kingston’s Oceana.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 0208 358 0200 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
