Police car involved in Twickenham collision

A police car has collided with a vehicle in an incident in Twickenham.

Major traffic and congestion occurred yesterday afternoon when a vehicle collided with a police car at around 5pm.

The police car was driving rapidly down Heath Road in Twickenham when, witnesses claim, the Mini Countryman allegedly swerved ahead, causing impact and damage to the front of both vehicles.

A bus driver, Geoffrey Hammock said: “I am very shocked but relieved no one was hurt.”

The collision occurred just after rush hour at 5:05pm, and a woman was seen leaving the vehicle unharmed.

Both drivers were assessed at the scene by London Ambulance Service however no one was taken to hospital and neither individuals sustained life threatening injuries.

Bus and transport services towards Brentford, Hounslow, and Whitton were part suspended, this affected the 281, 267 and H22 routes.

Geoffrey Hammock, who has been a bus driver for over 30 years, said: “I am pleased that the incident was handled well and cleared up efficiently.”

He added: “The police did a good job at getting the road reopened.”

Motorists were cautioned and traffic was redirected away from Heath Road.  

Passengers who aimed to travel towards Hammersmith from Fulwell on the 267 bus service were redirected to another route whilst the roads were cleared and debris were moved.

Other passengers attempting to travel to Twickenham station from Heath Road, roughly 800 yards, were advised to take alternative routes.

Passenger James Baxter said: “This has been inconvenient, I was on my way home.”

He added: “I am glad everyone is okay but any incident happening at such busy time is quite stressful.”

Both cars were towed and Heath Road was cleared around 6:30pm. 

In addition full bus services were up and running in both directions shortly after and motorist were able to access the road.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 17:00hrs on Wednesday, 25 September, a police car and a member of the public’s car were involved in a collision on Heath Road in Twickenham.

“Additional officers and the London Ambulance Service attended.

“The occupants of both cars were assessed at the scene by LAS.

“The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed, as is routine.”
