As the deadline for the Conservative nomination for mayor looms, front-runner Zac Goldsmith MP received a resounding endorsement as seven out of the nine London Tory council leaders backed his campaign.
The prominent environmentalist’s nomination has also been supported by leading Conservative blog, Conservative Home, and the Evening Standard.
Mr Goldsmith, MP for Richmond Park, has been the favourite to win the Conservative nomination since he entered his name into the race in June.
Wandsworth Council leader, Councillor Ravi Govindia, said: “I have been hugely impressed by your [Zac] record of steadfast commitment to the electors of Richmond.
“I believe you [Zac] will bring the same commitment to Londoners as their Mayor.”
Standing on a platform of opposition to Heathrow expansion, environmental issues and building houses on brown-field sites, Mr Goldsmith has consistently polled ahead of his rivals.
Thanks v much to Kingston Council leader @kevinjdavis for his kind endorsement: https://t.co/7cebGtBun0

Other candidates hoping to be the Conservative choice for London Mayor are Syed Kamall MEP, Stephen Greenhalgh and Andrew Boff.
Whoever receives the nomination will face Labour’s Sadiq Khan MP in the race for London Mayor, who beat the favourite Dame Tessa Jowell two weeks ago.
Voting for the selection of the Conservative candidate ends on the September 30.
