Kensington MP Emma Dent-Coad has slammed the comments made about Grenfell in Theresa May’s resignation speech today.
Ms Dent-Coad condemned Theresa May’s failure to meet her own deadlines to house people, and said she had failed to make any meaningful changes to legislation in regards to combustible cladding, which caused the rapid spread of the fire.
She said: “From the first day of her awkward visit to Grenfell, to her last day congratulating herself for failures, Theresa May should be ashamed of her actions and lack of leadership.
“Her predecessor’s bonfire of red tape was responsible for the decimation of building and fire safety regulations yet she did nothing to redress this.”
She went on to say: “The inquiry is so narrowly focused that it threatens to exonerate the perpetrators of this avoidable atrocity and may not give any recommendations. The Commission set up to decide the future of the site has divided the community.
“As one survivor said, ‘Grenfell Two is in the post’. Quite a legacy.”
In June 2017 72 people were killed in the Grenfell Tower fire, and many remain displaced.
Fireproof cladding was in the first design specifications before refurbishment took place, but was later replaced with cheaper, flammable cladding in order to cut costs.
Theresa May initially refused to greet local residents and volunteers affected by the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, meeting only the emergency services and citing ‘security’ as an excuse.
