Train passenger dies following escalator fall at Waterloo Station

Police have launched a fresh appeal for witnesses following the death of a train passenger who was allegedly pushed down the stairs at Waterloo Station.

Ian Airlie, 48, was found dead at his home in Greenwich, potentially as a result of the fall, on the 10th October.

The incident happened around 5pm on an escalator near the Jubilee Line section of Waterloo Station on September 15.

Following his fall, Airlie is believed to have spoken to security at the station and he stated that he had fallen into a woman described as of south Asian appearance who also fell on the escalator.

Detective Inspector Chris Rodgers, who is leading the investigation said: “Mr Airlie’s death is tragic, and his family continue to mourn the loss of a loving son, partner, brother and uncle.

“We are determined to piece together the events, and give Mr Airlie’s family the answers they are searching for. You can assist us by coming forward with any information. However small it may seem to you, this could be the key we need to unlock the investigation.”

It is then claimed that Mr. Airlie talked to a woman on a bus leaving from North Greenwich underground station after getting off the tube.

He was bleeding from above his left eye when she gave him a tissue.

The described individuals, along with any other witnesses to the incident, are being urged to come forward by police.

The police have added that they are awaiting the results of additional testing after a post-mortem examination on the 29th October 2024 which yielded inconclusive results.

They added that if anyone has any information about the incident to call the police at 101 or Crimestoppers, an independent charity, anonymously at 0800 555 1111.
