The best and worst London boroughs for GCSEs in 2024

Sutton and Kingston upon Thames had the best GCSE results of any borough in 2024, and Croydon had the worst, new Government data has revealed.

The top two boroughs saw an average score across eight key subjects of 59.1 while Croydon scored just 44.8.

West London dominated the league tables, with Richmond upon Thames, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Kensington and Chelsea in the top 10.

Lambeth, Waltham Forest, and Lewisham joined Croydon at the bottom of the league.

Croydon’s GCSE results were still higher than the average in the West Midlands, North West, Yorkshire and The Humber, or the North East.

Charis Penfold, director for education services at Kingston upon Thames’ Achieving for Children said: “These outstanding results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of our students, teachers, and school leaders.

“Kingston’s commitment to high-quality teaching, targeted support, and strong school improvement initiatives continues to yield exceptional outcomes.”

Ian Dodds, director of children’s services, at Kingston Council argued that partnerships were behind its success.

He said: “The strong partnerships between schools, local services and the school improvement team play a crucial role in driving continuous improvement and ensuring all students reach their full potential.”
