Collapsed Thames towpath between Richmond Lock and Kew Gardens still closed

The Thames towpath between Richmond Lock and Kew Gardens will remain closed following the collapse of a section of the path in October.

Engineers and specialist contractors are currently investigating temporary and permanent solutions to address the damage but have so far been unable to find a solution.

The closure has resulted in significant disruption for cyclists, walkers, and commuters who regularly use the path, including Richmond resident Lisa Addison who has been using it for more than 25 years.

Addison said: “It’s a huge disturbance to the most picturesque part of the Thames.

“I do that cycle every single day if I can.

“People wonder why I do it, but I never cease to be mesmerized by the beauty in the nature.

“I can honestly tell you, I find it very difficult on any day of the year, whatever the weather, not to stop and take a photo”

The Syon Reach section of the towpath collapsed into the water on October 19 as a result of high river levels and strong winds, leaving an impassable hole.

On the weekend that the path collapsed, Addison recalled noticing unusually high-water levels along the path.

She said: “I remember thinking that doesn’t look normal to me, that’s too much gushing water.

“I had never seen waves of water like that.

“I could see that I was riding into danger from 50 yards away”.

The closure has also had an impact on local tourism, with visitors unable to enjoy one of the country’s most popular walking routes.

Richmond residents expressed their frustration with the lack of action from the borough’s council and also raised questions about the preparedness of local authorities to manage such incidents.

Richmond Council has introduced diversions and urged people not to attempt to access the closed path as it remains unsafe.

A spokesperson for Richmond Council said: “We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding regarding the closure of the Thames towpath between Richmond Lock and Kew Gardens car park on Ferry Lane.

“While we are not the only body with interests and responsibilities in the damaged section, we have consciously taken the lead on this very complex project and are convening relevant parties in efforts to deliver solutions as quickly as possible.

“Our engineers have been working with specialist contractors and we have implemented some emergency temporary works to reduce further damage to the towpath.

“We continue to develop designs for the permanent solution and aim to start these works soon, subject to required consents.”
