The decision gave outline planning permission for Capco to redevelop the site which includes the Earl’s Court 1 Exhibition Centre.
The £8billion Earl’s Court regeneration plan got the go ahead from Kensington and Chelsea Council on Tuesday.
The decision gave outline planning permission for Capco to redevelop the site within Kensington and Chelsea, which includes the Earl’s Court 1 Exhibition Centre.
Councillor Paul Warrick, who chaired the meeting, said: “Redeveloping Earl’s Court to provide much needed housing and other uses has been our policy for many years.
“On both sides of the border we hope that the granting of this planning application will make Earl’s Court a more desirable place to live with less congestion and more opportunity for work, commerce and leisure.”
Hammersmith and Fulham Council approved the plan in September, despite opposition from local residents affected by the scheme.
West Kensington and Gibbs Green housing estates will be overhauled, and many residents are upset over the break up of their community.
The Sir Terry Farrell-designed project, estimated to take 20 years to complete, will level the iconic music and exhibition venue to make way for a new ‘urban quarter’, featuring homes, offices and hotels and shops.
Capco Chief Executive Ian Hawksworth said: “The project has real momentum and we look forward to working with the local authorities to deliver Sir Terry Farrell’s vision for a new urban quarter in this exciting part of London.”
An estimated 12,500 jobs will be created, as well as 7,500 homes, 1,500 of which are classed as ‘affordable’.
