A single gain from Labour in the council elections has won them power in Merton albeit in minority with the political shape of Merton remaining in limbo.
Labour now holds 28 seats to the Conservatives’ 27 compared to 27 and 30 respectively after the 2006 elections.
Councillor Stephen Alambritis said: “The people of Merton felt it was time for change.
“We are happy to take over. With the impending cuts looming the residents knew that we are the caring party.”
The Liberal Democrats won two seats having left the 2006 elections empty-handed while the Merton Park Independents held onto their 3 seats.
The Labour council will form a coalition of sorts with the Independents although Cllr Alambritis has said it might not last forever. He did add that there is plenty of respect between the two and Merton’s interest will be put first.
Outgoing Conservative leader, Councillor David Williams, said it would be a challenge to Labour to match his parties four remarkable years.
