A blood-covered armed robber was seen escaping with £5,000 from a Wimbledon post office this afternoon.
Eye witnesses saw several men burst from the Junction Box Post Office in Wimbledon Broadway at roughly 3pm.
The Post Office workers were seen chasing the robbers but failed to catch them.
The daylight robbers are thought to have claimed £5,000 as they timed their raid with a money delivery to the shop.
Abdullah Ayouh, who works in Aya takeaway opposite the post office, said: “One of the staff came in here afterwards and he was covered in blood.
“He said he had been hit and then they stole the money.”
A witness in the New Wimbledon Theatre claimed that a man with a bag of money ran down Gladstone Road while Junction Box workers and pedestrians tried to stop him.
Police closed the post office and were turning people away as further police cars – believed to be forensic teams – arrived at the shop.
Staff in Chimichanga said police used their CCTV in an attempt to identify the robber, but could not make out the image as the assailant sped past.
