Award-winning Broadway show set to make West End bow

Critically acclaimed show Hamilton: an American Musical opens in London tonight.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revered production, playing on Broadway since 2015, begins its run at the newly-renovated Victoria Palace Theatre after construction delays pushed the opening back by two weeks.

It tells the story of the America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton’s rise from poverty during the 1776 civil war through a hip-hop and R&B soundtrack.

Last year it won 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Unknown Jamael Westman, a 25-year-old RADA graduate, will play the leading role.

Tickets are notoriously hard to come by, regularly selling out within minutes and changing hands for up to $10,000.

General tickets go on sale on January 30 after 100,000 registered online for pre-sale tickets ahead of its London debut.

There are daily and weekly lotteries for £10 tickets online and at the theatre.

Meanwhile, Lin-Manuel Miranda will return to the titular role in his native country of Puerto Rico for a limited run in January 2019, after Hurricane María ravaged the island in September.
