Young’s pubs across London are celebrating the brewery’s 193rd birthday this week and The Ship is marking the occasion by raising money for charity.
After raising more than £200,000 for the organisation last year, the Wandsworth pub continued Young’s and their suppliers’ efforts yesterday by donating all the proceeds from their bar snacks to Pass the Plate.
Pass the Plate is an initiative founded by Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, which helps to raise awareness and money for food banks across the UK.
Moreover, the money raised by The Ship will be invested directly back into Wandsworth’s food banks.
A Young’s Brewery representative highlighted that Pass the Plate have 33 different food banks in and around their pubs which will benefit from the money raised this week.
She said: “We know the cost-of-living crisis is current, we know people struggle. We want to be giving back.
“What we like about Wooden Spoon is that it is a big charity with smaller initiatives and we can see where the money is spent.”
Young’s day kicks off a month of fundraising across their pubs throughout October.
This coming month is set to help them reach their goal of raising another £200,000 for the charity by the end of the year.
Wooden Spoon supports children and young adults who are disabled, disengaged, or disenfranchised.
Last year’s donations have helped to fund wheelchair rugby, promote positive mental health for young women through the sport, aided research on allergies and have supported community builds for neurodiverse children.
The charity’s spokesperson said: “Young’s do an amazing amount of fundraising for us.”
He continued to explain that Wooden Spoon is a grant giving charity that takes the money raised by customers, staff, and suppliers, and gives it to the projects that need it the most.
In addition to The Ship’s fundraising, The Windmill in Clapham is offering pet portraits, as well as keg rolling from pub-to-pub in Wimbledon, with all the proceeds from these events going to Wooden Spoon’s initiatives.
The occasion was also marked by a celebration of the brewery’s heritage as Young’s dray horses paraded through London, and also offered the opportunity to have ‘Dinner on the Dray.’

Beyond today’s fundraising events, this week’s pubgoers can also expect a free pint of Young’s Original, Beavertown, a glass of wine or a diet coke on the Young’s On Tap App.
