Young Muslims from south west London are facing an uphill struggle – as 14 of them set off on a gruelling hike across Bavarian Alps today to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
The five-day expedition will see the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association’s (AMYA) hiking club join a 25-strong team to clamber over the highest mountain in Germany, the formidable Zugspitze which towers 2,962m above sea level.
AMYA, who have a history of working with the Legion, are hiking and also sleeping out in the Wetterstein Mountains for three nights in aid of the Poppy Appeal.
Deborah Armantrading, a community fundraiser for The Legion, said: “We enjoy working with AMYA as they are dedicated and passionate about their charity work, and the Poppy Appeal would not be the same without their help.
“The association has been crucial in raising funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for several years participating in mass collections all over the UK, providing us with a significant number of volunteer collectors and raising amazing totals.
“The Legion is extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all of the volunteers.”
The hikers will attempt three peaks during their mission and say they are keen to highlight the positive contribution being made by British Muslim Youth every single day in the UK and abroad.
National AMYA President, Mirza Waqas Ahmad, said: “Loyalty to one’s country and serving humanity is part of Islam, so we have been happy to support Royal British Legion for several years.
“Our youth are always ready to sacrifice their time for charitable initiatives and raise money for much needed causes.”
The AMYA trek falls under the Mercy4Mankind charity challenge, and the youth group were honoured at the House of Lords earlier this year when they handed over cheques worth a staggering £340,000 to various charitable organisations.
So far the group have raised an awe-inspiring £1.5million and are still preparing for two 10k runs and a Paris to London bikeathon!
