The Conservatives’ Paul Scully retained his seat in 2017 with a 24.4% majority, with 26,567 votes, giving him 51.1%. This was up 9.6% from the 2015 election.

Cheam voted 53.7% to leave the European Union in the 2016 Referendum.

The seat has historically been dominated by the Conservatives, but it was held by the Liberal Democrats between 1997 and 2015.

Bonnie Craven (Labour)

Bonnie Craven has lived in the Sutton and Cheam area since 1980. She is a qualified teacher and now a trade union officer.

Ms Craven was the Labour candidate in 2017, where she finished third behind the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. Her main priority, if she is elected in December, will be to protect the NHS.

She said: “I’ve fought for the NHS all my life. On 12th December you have a choice. You can vote for the end of the NHS. Or you can vote for a life-long campaigner for its preservation.”

Hina Bokhari (Liberal Democrats)

A teacher for over 20 years, Hina Bokhari founded an educational charity which has helped over 40,000 disadvantaged young people. She is the latest generation to be a teacher as she followed in the footsteps of her grandfather and father.

Mrs Bokhari joined the Liberal Democrats in 2017 and last year she became a councillor for Merton.

Claire Jackson-Prior (Green)

Claire Jackson-Prior has lived in Sutton since 2002, and she works full-time as an administrator in Leatherhead.

She is critical of the Conservatives handling of the NHS, “I oppose proposals from the local NHS to replace the two acute facilities we currently have at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals with a single acute unit.”

Mrs Jackson-Prior is also a founder of the Gower Initiative for Modern Money Studies, whose primary objective is to promote a better public understanding of economics.

Paul Scully (Conservative)

The Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, Mr Scully has been the MP Sutton and Cheam since 2015.

Mr Scully has lived in Sutton for 28 years, and his priority is the improvement and protection of the NHS.

Prior to the election announcement he said: “We are investing record amounts into the NHS and building 40 new hospitals to help our NHS cope with increasing demand and ensure patients continue to get world class care.”
