THE OVAL will prove a fitting venue as one of the hosts of cricket’s last-ever ICC Champions Trophy competition.

That is the view of Steve Elworthy, the tournament’s director, speaking as the Surrey ground was confirmed as one of three to host the competition’s finale in England and Wales in June 2013.

As well as a semi-final of the 50-over event, which is for the best eight international teams in world cricket, Surrey CCC’s stadium will also host England’s group clash against Sri Lanka.

“We have seen some fantastic clashes there and ends to the series whether that be Test matches, Twenty20 games or one-day internationals,” said Elworthy.

“They hosted the final of the Champions Trophy there in 2004 which was an incredible game, with a ninth-wicket stand by the West Indies to pip England at the post.

“They have hosted these major matches and international global events in the past so it’s a slick operation and they know exactly what they are up to.”
