Thousands are set to benefit from the car hire scheme as the number of on-street car club bays will rise to 150.
Another 60 new car club vehicles are now available to Wandsworth residents.
Thousands will benefit from the low cost, car hire scheme as the number of on-street car club bays will rise to 150.
The number of locals using the scheme has rocketed since its introduction in 2007, and is now among the highest in London.
Expanding car clubs is a key priority for the council’s Travel Choices campaign which aims to improve residents’ transport options.
Councillor Russell King said: “Wandsworth is already the car club capital of south London and these new bays will bring the schemes within easy reach of more local people.”
Research shows that, on average, one car club vehicle results in a reduction of 20 privately owned cars in the local area.
“The cars are modern, fuel efficient and well maintained which is good news for local air quality,” said Councillor King.
The new on-street car club spaces are being managed by City Car Club, Zipcar and Greenwheels.
City Car Club Managing Director, James Finlayson, said: “Despite operating our service in most other boroughs across London, this is now the first time we have had the opportunity to do so in Wandsworth, and we are delighted to be doing so.
“Early signs are very positive with great uptake of the service by local residents, and businesses too.”
Cars can be booked on-line or via phone and used for as little as one hour at a time before being returned to the same bay.
