Foodies Festival: Battersea Park

Friday 17 August – Sunday 19 August, 11am-7pm

Tickets: Available at the door each day £25, concessions £18, one-day ticket £15

Free entry for children aged 16 and under accompanied by an adult.

Visit the Foodies Festival at Battersea Park to meet star chefs and experience the most exciting mix of food, drink and culinary talent. The Chef’s Theatre will host names such as Levi Roots, Clare Smyth from Restaurant Gordon Ramsey and Masterchef finalist Andrew Kojima, who will present cooking demonstrations and help you get to grips with some of their best recipes.

You can sample and buy artisan food from over 100 exhibitors, indulge in signature dishes from top restaurants and sip summer cocktails shaken by expert mixologists. The trip can be a family day out, with Childrens Cookery School offering cookery lessons for youngsters.

 

Night Safari at London Wetland Centre: Barnes

Friday 17 August, 6.15pm-9.15pm

Tickets: £20 per child, one adult per child is free. Booking essential

Experience an exciting evening in the wild and discover what happens after dark. You can learn how to make a fire and then listen to stories around the flames, as well as visiting the Pond Zone to do twilight pond dipping, using nets and an underwater camera to see what mini-beasts are lurking beneath the surface at dusk. Later, swap pond life for aerial acrobatics with a bat walk. Seven species of bat are found at London Wetland Centre and with the bat detectors you can hear these amazing flying mammals chattering.

 

London 2012 Festival – World Music on the Riverside: Richmond

Saturday 18 August – Sunday 19 August

Enjoy a weekend of free entertainment at Richmond riverside. Part of the World Music on the Riverside festival, this offers a global celebration of live music and dance from around the world. Featuring a diverse range of performances from some exciting artists including percussionist Rodger Bradshaw and his yidaki drums as well as Manaia’s traditional Maori music, there is also the opportunity to join in and learn the haka. The music will continue into the evening with the sultry sounds of Jesus Cutino & Son de Cuba, reggae from the Global Reggae Band and a lively finale from contemporary Irish musicians The Father Teds.

 

 

Pursuit of Perfection: The Politics of Sport: South London Gallery, Peckham

Friday August 17 Friday 14 September

If you’re missing the Olympics, why not visit this exhibition which brings together art works playing on some of the issues raised by sport, the politics surrounding it and its representation in the media. Aleksandra Mir’s spectacular installation Triumph, 2009, comprises 2,529 trophies; a sound piece by Janice Kerbel presents a specially scripted baseball commentary; and works by Roderick Buchanan, Lucy Gunning, Jonathan Monk, Ariel Orozco and Paul Pfeiffer take football as their subject. In Southwark Old Town Hall, John Gerrard’s Exercise (Djibouti) 2012 uses digital technologies to explore aspects of sport, spectacle, military exercise and power.

 

That’s the Way to Do It!: Wandsworth Southside

Saturday 18 August, 1.30pm and 3.30pm

Red Herring’s That is The Way To Do It! is a life sized and alternative version of the much loved Victorian seaside entertainment Punch and Judy, returning as a vehicle for hilarious satire in our credit crunched world.  An outdoor comedy with puppets, music and knockabout choreography, the infamous rebels take to the streets and ask the public for their support. Punch and Judy ask the public, what is harmless fun and when is it going too far?!

 

BBC Proms: Royal Albert Hall

Friday 17 August – Saturday 8 September

Tickets: £4.25-£44

The world’s greatest classical music festival continues at the Royal Albert Hall. This summer’s Proms line-up has over 75 Proms which include a mix of all genres. This week’s highlights include a Cage Centenary Celebration, a programme marking the centenary of his birth, music from Beethoven and Nielson as well as a Proms Plus Family event where you can bring along your instrument and join in.
