Wandsworth sport award winners announced

Sporting talents were honoured on Thursday night at the 15th Active Wandsworth Awards.

Two-time Olympic Judoka medallist Winston Gordon was on hand to award 11 winners.

A crowd of more than 200 gathered in the town hall to support and celebrate what was a positive sporting year for the borough.

The trophies served as rewards for members of the community, for their sporting prowess or involvement in supporting physical activities.

Sports Person of the Year for the under 21’s was won by Adam Hoshal.  

Rosie Cardoe was named under 13’s Sports Person of the Year – the diver had an outstanding year having won the national age group titles on the high board.

Spencer Hockey Club’s Lesley Gairns was recognised for her dedication and development of the sports junior division.

She received the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award, after also supporting many facility redevelopments at the Fieldview site.

The efforts of volunteers did not go unnoticed as 12 volunteers from eight sports clubs or organisations received the Voluntary Services to Sport award.

Jaden Davidson-Cameron was awarded the Young Volunteer of the Year trophy.

Having last year celebrated their 10th anniversary Balham Blazers Football Club were named Sports Club of the Year, while Putney High School under 13 Floor and Vault Gymnasts were named Team of the Year, finishing fourth in the 2011 national finals.

The Mayor’s Award went to Wandsworth Amateur Swimming Association who introduced a structured swimming programme for disabled youngsters.

Having established the Malory Eagles Sitting Volleyball Club, Ashley Trodden was awarded coach of the year. Trodden is also the assistant coach for the British Paralympics Sitting Volleyball Team.

Swimmer Ross Dibblin and Tim Livingstone jointly won the David Burns Award for their individual performances at the London Youth Games, while Wandsworth Girls Hockey Team won the JWE Davis Award.

Guests were also informed of Wandsworth’s plans to celebrate 2012 with the Get Active Wandsworth Festival.

The event will provide various activities from April 18-September 30.
