According to the New Belvedere Estate Residents’ Association 42,000 cars a week – over two million a year – go through Belvedere Grove.
There have been four consultations about reducing traffic and another is planned for January 2010.
An association spokesperson said: “We simply do not want what they are proposing. I do not understand why you are going into further consultation.”
The councils’ proposal for four road humps down the street will not stop ‘rat running’ claimed the association.
The spokesperson added the traffic was polluting the surrounding area and was not from the immediate vicinity but outside Merton.
Council Leader David Williams said: “The solution you see is to close off your roads.”
Wandsworth Council have had similar traffic issues recently and according to the Residents’ Association they dealt with them swiftly.
“Traffic belongs on main roads not residential ones and this was a Conservative policy.
“We are not getting co-operation from the local council,” added the spokesperson.
