A new support group for mums has arrived in Wandsworth with a mission to prioritise women’s mental health and wellbeing.
The Mum Club is a nationwide movement that already has branches across London, but Hannah Gill, 26, brought the movement to Wandsworth this summer.
As a young working parent living in London, Gill shared the challenges of adjusting to motherhood and the support that The Mum Club has given her.
She said: “It was an event that was made for me and not for my baby, which is so important for a mum’s mental health.
“It’s not just about living for your baby, it’s about living for yourself as well.
“You never quite know what it’s like until you have been a mum yourself, so talking to someone who understands where you are coming from is so important.”
After becoming a mother, Gill explored different sensory classes and groups, however, found they were all focused on the baby and never her own needs.
Gill said: “I felt like my whole purpose had become for somebody else, which is a really hard adjustment to go through.”
Since becoming the Wandsworth host, Gill has worked with lots of brands and guest speakers to put on brunch events where mothers can come together and enjoy a hot plate of food and good conversation.
These events include visits from sleep trainers, nutritionists, and companies like MerryGoRound who rent out baby equipment.
Nannies also attend each event to help look after the babies while the mums take the break they need.
Conversations at these events span from checking in on new mums and offering support, to discussing the latest fashion trends.
Gill said: “There are no limits, we have talked about everything and anything.
“Whatever the mum wants to get off her chest.”
She also has big plans for the future, including introducing mum and baby reformer Pilates classes and also starting a more relaxed coffee club.
Gill will also host a wreath making class at the end of November, complete with mulled wine and music.
While attending one of these events may feel daunting, she highlighted that everyone is in the same boat as she hopes to create a safe space for all mums.
She said: “I promise you, once you get over the fear and sit down and start to relax, it’s such a wholesome occasion.”
