The borough’s schools are running a programme of activities designed to teach children about the environment.
SCHOOLS across Merton are being offered free workshops to increase youngsters’ environmental awareness from this month.
The success of last year’s programme encouraged a repeat of the scheme this year which includes different activities ranging from a litter free teddy bear’s picnic for four to six year-olds, to a self-analysis of carbon footprints for those at secondary school.
Tracy Ricco, Eco-Schools Link teacher at Aragon Primary School, Morden, said: “We will definitely do it again. Pupils were really encouraged and really enjoyed it last year”.
Colliers Wood green campaigner, John Barker, governor at Willington Prep School, said: “There is trouble connecting green issues with the national curriculum. The older generation is disconnected from the planet and investment in children is crucial.”
There are a growing number of eco-schools in Merton, increasing from 30 to 37 in the last academic year.
Councillor David Simpson, Cabinet member for environment and leisure services said: “Merton Council is committed to improving our sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint and waste.
“Schemes such as these give young people an opportunity to learn about the importance of energy saving and recycling and help them to become more environmentally aware.”
