The increased demand for foodbanks in the UK

There are 7.2 million food insecure households currently in the UK, data shows.

A huge increase from 4.7 million in 2021/22.

Rising cost of living is creating more of a demand for food banks.

The Trussell Trust, a charity that runs the majority of food banks in the UK, said they experienced and increase in demand of nearly 75% from November 2023 to January 2024.

Food bank referrals peaked in January 2024, when Citizen’s Advice helped 22,452 people.

The Trussell Trust distributed parcels from 1,699 locations across the UK in 2023/24 and there are at least 1,172 additional independent food banks.
