The Rhythm & Views Film Festival will showcase iconic musical films for all ages in Croydon from tomorrow.
With Support from Film London, screenings will happen between June 15-29 at various locations including Boxpark Croydon and the BRIT School.
Festival attendees will be entertained with a free screening of the 2019 multi-Oscar winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody on Father’s Day, June 16 at 8pm.
Festival organiser Nia Reynolds said: “If you love films and music just rock up and come in!
“This festival is about films from any genre with music at the heart that inspire and lift you.
“We want to incubate in Croydon and make this one of the headline festivals.”
A free screening of The Blues Brothers follows on June 17 at 8pm in Boxpark Croydon and organisers are finalising a screening location to celebrate 30 years of Disney’s Little Mermaid.
The festival pays tribute to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin who died aged 76 last August, with a screening of Amazing Grace on June 20 at the David Lean Cinema.
Ms Reynolds added: “Croydon was one of the worst hit areas during the 2011 London riots and shortly after that we partnered with the BRIT School to provide film production workshops for young people.”
Iconic Hollywood actress Doris Day, who died last month aged 97, will be recognised with a screening of Calamity Jane, the ‘rootin’, tootin’, shootin’ cowgirl, on June 19.
The screening will be combined with a line dance performance by Certitude London who support people with learning disabilities and BRIT School students.
Around 30 hand-picked independent international short films from hundreds of entries will be shown throughout the festival.
After winning his first Oscar for BlacKkKlansman in February, the festival finale will be a 30th anniversary screening of Spike Lee’s 1990 Oscar-nominated Do the Right Thing.
