Witnesses say the man is known locally amongst residents and commuters.
Police have arrested a man who sexually assaulted a female commuter on a Waterloo-bound train at Wimbledon Station this morning.
Witnesses were able to identify the man, whose name has not been released by police, as a local alcoholic with a history of exposing himself to women and young girls on public transport.
Martin Collwell, 56, who witnessed the incident, said the man is known locally among residents and commuters and even saw him being escorted out of Wimbledon Station by community support officers two weeks ago.
“He seems to just buy a cheap ticket and roam up and down the platforms drunk harassing women,” said Mr Collwell.
A police spokesman said: “We have arrested the man for sexually assaulting a female passenger and for indecent exposure.”
Rail staff said they will be taking special measures to increase safety at Wimbledon Station following the incident.
