WATCH: Mushroom club creates space for fungi education and community

As the world warms and traditional farming techniques come under threat due to climate change, one south London community is coming together to spread awareness for an answer.

The South London Mushroom Club has been meeting monthly at The Remakery in Brixton for almost a year, fueled by its founder Adi Staempfli’s passion for the study of fungi, also known as mycology.

Adi arrived at the latest meeting with baskets of mushrooms freshly foraged from a Sussex forest and an armful of handbooks.

He proceeded to teach his guests how to identify and name the fungi with the aid of his expert knowledge and a microscope before sharing a meal of mushroom pasta.

For Adi, mycology is more than a hobby: it is the answer to a warming world.

Mushrooms have a knack for growing in almost any environment, he said, and have a range of uses beyond food, such as in medicines, fabrics, and building materials.

Adi’s goal is to share his philosophy of ‘Mush Love’, built on environmental and social justice.
