Wandsworth expands Mega Skip recycling scheme

Wandsworth Council has expanded its popular Mega Skip recycling scheme from 12 to 18 days a year.

The scheme started last year and offers residents a convenient way of getting rid of unwanted household items for free.

Since launching, the scheme has led to a 11% reduction in fly-tipping.

Judi Gasser, Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Environment said: “The beauty of our scheme is that everything left in a Mega Skip is recycled, which is not only good for our local environment, but because it reduces our disposal costs, means we can also continue to offer our residents the same low council tax.”

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH: The scheme is designed to reduce fly-tipping of larger, harder to dispose of items

The council’s decision to expand the service hopes to help make Wandsworth a more sustainable and healthier place to live.

Residents can deposit six items into the skip, capable of accommodating tonnes of household waste.

It’s aimed to help people dispose of larger items that can’t easily be left out for normal refuse and recycling collections.

Gasser added: “The figures show they are making a difference and we’re getting brilliant feedback from people who find them a real help – especially during the cost of living crisis.”

The next Mega Skip day will take place on Saturday between 9am and 12pm.

The council is expecting high demand on the day and will operate a first come first served service and Twitter will be updated once skips are full.

In addition, anyone looking to dispose of items on the day should familiarise themselves with what items can and can’t be dropped off.
