An increasing number of contented Hammersmith and Fulham residents have expressed support for the performance of their local council.

It was revealed on Tuesday that 75% of residents who took part in a ‘tri-borough’ phone survey are happy with council services.

The results bring Hammersmith and Fulham closer to their neighbouring boroughs – Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea – in terms of residents’ satisfaction.

“These latest survey results put us in a small band of elite UK councils with residents’ satisfaction of 75% or above,” said Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

The findings of the phone survey provide further encouragement when analysed alongside the results of the 2011 Annual Residents’ Survey, released last month.

In the survey – completed by 1,193 residents – 79% agreed with the council’s efforts to make the borough cleaner and greener.

Residents were also content with progress made in the culture and leisure sector, with 76% of taxpayers satisfied with the borough’s parks, gardens and open spaces.

Katie Shaw, Operations Manager at the Hammersmith Community Gardens Association – who work closely with the council – is not surprised by the results.

“I’m definitely happy with the council’s funding for parks and open spaces. There is a lot going on in the borough, so it is really good in that respect,” she said.

“It’s great to have numerous different projects, and it creates a good community feeling.”

Despite a national cut in funding, residents in the borough also appear to be pleased with library provision.

Over 32% declared themselves ‘very satisfied’ with the local library service – more than any other public service in the borough.

“Most people are very happy with libraries in the borough,” said Richard Grant, Customer Service Team Leader for Hammersmith and Fulham libraries.

“The council has done a very good job in preserving and promoting library facilities.”

As a whole, 83% of residents are satisfied with Hammersmith and Fulham as a place to live.
