Christmas has faded, the weather is dark and gloomy, and everyone is back at work.
Debt level is higher, motivation is low and new year’s resolutions aren’t all going to plan.
This all builds up to one date: Blue Monday, the most depressing date of the year.
Commonly, it falls on the third Monday of January, and this year, Blue Monday 2018 is January 15.
But should we be so negative about our lives on this day? It may not the most wonderful time of the year, but the chances are things aren’t all that bad.
Ashley Verma, who owns a new fitness empire DEFINE London, agrees that fitness and exercise can help beat the January blues, especially when you combine it with spending time with friends.
She said: “The weather can be a major catalyst for dragging your energy levels down.
“It is important to motivate yourself to beat the cold weather and dark afternoon’s and a good way to do this is to schedule in a session with a friend.
“Workout buddies are great for driving you on, not just on Blue Monday but for fitness in general.”
Samaritans are encouraging people to have a ‘Brew Monday’, in order to turn the negative aspects of this day into something positive.
On their website, a statement said: Take a little time out by having a cuppa and a chat with anyone you know may be going through a tough time – showing you care and listening could save a life.”
In fact, mental health charity Mind wish to dispel the idea of Blue Monday completely by using #BlueAnyDay.
In a statement, the charity said: “Blue Monday contributes to damaging misconceptions about depression and trivialises an illness that can be life threatening.
“There is no credible evidence to suggest that one day in particular can increase the risk of people feeling depressed.”
Across the country, other charities are spreading a similar message.
So what can you do if you’re feeling a bit low and just need a boost?
