Croydon community gathers to remember victims of tragic tram crash with extra minute’s silence

More than a 1,000 people gathered outside Croydon Town Hall to pay their respects to the seven victims of Wednesday’s tram accident this Remembrance Day.

The sombre mood cast from the tragedy was appropriate to the yearly Armistice Day ceremony, with a further minute’s silence added to remember the victims.

The large turnout was indicative of the shock felt by Croydon residents at the scale of an accident that seemed impossible on a well-used tram system.

The tram derailed on a track bend, killing seven people and injuring many more. The driver is currently under arrest on suspicion of manslaughter.

Croydon Council Leader Tom Newman said: “Following Wednesday’s horrific tram incident, this has been a harrowing week for the people of Croydon.

“I and many others also feel a sense of pride in how, as a community, the people of Croydon have come together to support each other through a most challenging and traumatic time.”
