The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan

Mayor joins multi-faith D-Day 80th anniversary commemoration

Sadiq Khan united with faith leaders to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day at City Hall’s annual Remembrance Service on Friday.

Sikh, Hindu, Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith leaders spoke to the congregation and gave readings, prayers and hymns, while Bishop of Barking Lynne Cullens conducted the service and gave the opening address.

The Mayor of London was joined by London Assembly chair Andrew Boff AM, and City Hall’s Royal British Legion branch chair and Armed Forces Champion Len Duvall OBE AM, to pay tribute to those killed in both world wars and other conflicts along with marking 80 years since the allied landings in Normandy.

Khan said: “City Hall’s Remembrance Day Service gives us an important opportunity to reflect on the courage, dedication and bravery of our Armed Forces.

“As we mark the momentous 80th anniversary of D-Day we commemorate and honour all the servicemen and women from the UK and Commonwealth who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“We will forever be in their debt.”

Senior representatives from the Metropolitan Police Service, Transport for London, London Ambulance Service, British Red Cross and others participated in the wreath laying ceremony.

London borough mayors and leaders, plus those representing the armed services and cadets were also in attendance.

Another event marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day has seen portraits of 16 veterans who served in Normandy placed on display in London’s Living Room.

Boff was grateful to be able to pay his respects at the service.

He said: “Our thoughts today are with our serving Armed Forces personnel and their families, and with all those who have lost homes, friends, family members and communities to war.”
