This Remembrance Sunday will honour the British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts, marking 100 years since the end of World War I.
Chelsea Pensioner Bill Gorrie, 79, said: “Time does tend to wither things and people forget. I think it’s up to every generation to ensure that nothing so serious like WW1 ever happens again.
“We need to continue to teach and remind the younger generations that their great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents were all involved.”
Events across south west London this weekend will commemorate the anniversary.
Croydon
A service of remembrance will be held at Croydon Minster from 10.55am to 12pm on Church Street.
The remembrance parade will then head down North End at 12.20pm and lay a wreath outside the war memorial on Katharine Street on Croydon Town Hall.
Hammersmith & Fulham
There will be two parades in the north and south of the borough with two separate services.
Hammersmith & Fulham Mayor Councillor Daryl Brown said: “The 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War will make our tributes even more poignant this year.”
In Shepherd’s Bush the parade will start at Sulgrave Road at 10.15am before the service at the war memorial on Shepherds Bush Green.
After the service, there will be a march past in Shepherds Bush Road.
In Fulham the parade will begin at Parsons Green at 10.20am and head down New Kings Road to the Fulham war memorial in Vicarage Garden for a service attended by the Mayor.
Kensington & Chelsea
The main Act of Remembrance in Kensington and Chelsea will take place at the war memorial in Sloane Square at 10.55am on Sunday.
A Service of Remembrance will follow in the Holy Trinity Church on Sloane Street.
There will also be an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Kensington High Street at the same time, followed by a Service of Remembrance at St. Mary Abbots Church.
Kingston-Upon-Thames
There are four remembrance services across Kingston on Sunday.
There will be a service at New Malden war memorial from 9.30am.
In Kingston town a procession will head to the war memorial from the Guildhall at 10.37am to lay wreaths.
At 11.15am a short Rededication Ceremony will take place at the East Surrey Gates in the Market Place, followed by a march past the Guildhall.
There will also be services starting at 10.45am at Surbiton and Chessington war memorials.
Five ‘Tommy’ sculptures will be unveiled across the borough over the weekend and there will also be talks, readings and a WW1 concert.
Lambeth
There will be a Remembrance Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony from 9am, starting with a procession from Windrush Square, outside Brixton Library, to Lambeth Town Hall from at 8.50am.
Services will also take place from 10.30am at Kennington Park war memorial and the African Caribbean memorial statue in Windrush Square, as well as at the Vicennes war memorial on Vincennes estate at 3pm.
Merton
On Friday 9 November, a ‘Tommy’ silhouette will be unveiled inside Mitcham War Memorial by the Mayor at 3.50pm with a 2-minute silence and music from the Veterans choir.
On Sunday 11, remembrance services will start from 9am at Nelson Health Centre on Kingston Road in Wimbledon and 10.40am at both the Mitcham War Memorial on Lower Green West and the Wimbledon War Memorial in Wimbledon Village.
There will also be a special commemorative event from 6.30pm at the civic centre in Morden.
A beacon will be lit to signify the light of peace after years of war.
Merton Mayor Councillor Mary Curtin said: “This fitting event will play its part in the nation’s tribute and mark the day when the guns fell silent, with the lighting of a Beacon and the ringing of bells.”
Richmond-Upon-Thames
There will be a parade from Old Deer Park in Richmond at 10.15am that will proceed to Whittaker Avenue.
A service will then be held at the war memorial on Whittaker Avenue at 10.40am for the laying of the wreath at 11am.
There are also services in Twickenham Green, Hampton, East Sheen, Barnes, Barnes, East Twickenham, Whitton, Teddington, Hampton Hill and Hampton Wick.
There will be a special commemoration service at St Mary’s Church in Twickenham at 6.00pm on Sunday.
Sutton
In Sutton the memorial service will take place at Christ Church with St Philip in Worcester Park from 10am.
Following the church service there will be a remembrance service at 10.55am at the war memorial in Central Road, Worcester Park.
