A cooperative Brixton bicycle shop is launching a crowdfunding campaign to ensure its survival before its Stockwell Road premises is converted into luxury flats.
Brixton Cycles has served the South London cycling community since 1983 and hopes to raise £40,000 by the end of the year so the shop can move.
The campaign to raise the money launches on October 22 with an event supported by Brixton Brewery at Brixton East on Barrington Road.
Lincoln Romain, who has been at the shop for 26 years, said: “We’re disappointed to be leaving our current premises. Brixton Cycles has played a key role in the development of this community over the last 32 years.
“Now we are being excluded from the next chapter of Brixton’s story.
“However, with change comes opportunity and we are hopeful that, with the support of our community, we can make the new Brixton Cycles even bigger and better.”
The event will feature music from The No Frills Band and the Balham Ukulele Society. All profits made from the drinks sold throughout the event will be donated to the campaign.
Last year Brixton Cycles was named the London’s Best Small Bike Retailer at the London Cycling Awards.
