London’s finest film stars will be waltzing down the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday as the movie award season gets into full swing.
The ceremony will be held in Beverly Hills where several of London’s actors are nominated for awards including three of Hammersmith’s greatest exports, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Dame Helen Mirren.
Newly engaged Benedict Cumberbatch is in contention for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of World War II Enigma code breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.
The film has proved to be both a critical and commercial success and is up for a total of five awards.
Cumberbatch’s co-star Keira Knightley, who originally hails from Richmond and is expecting her first child with husband James Righton, is nominated for best supporting actress in the drama.
BRITISH BEAUTY: Kiera Knightley is also nominated
Fellow Londoner Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything has earned him rave reviews and William Hill make him their odds on favourite to win the best actor at 1/5 ahead of Cumberbatch who is at 10/3.
Redmayne described the experience of playing Professor Hawking as ‘an extraordinary mixture of great privilege and great responsibility’.
Both British biopics which Cumberbatch and Redmayne star in are leading the way in BAFTA nominations which were revealed on Friday.
They have also been tipped for Oscar success at next month’s Academy Awards, the nominations of which will be announced on January 15.
In the Golden Globes’ best actress drama category, home-grown talent Rosamund Pike is nominated for her role as Amy Dunne in critically acclaimed thriller Gone Girl.

Dame Helen Mirren, who is a three-time Golden Globe winner, will be hoping to make it four in the best actress category for a musical or comedy for her part in The Hundred Foot Journey.
She will be up against Londoner Emily Blunt who is also shortlisted for her role in Disney’s film adaptation of the Tony award winning Broadway musical Into the Woods.
Following on from the Golden Globes will be the Screen Actors Guild Awards before the awards move over to these shores for the BAFTAS on February 8.
The awards season will culminate with the prestigious Academy Awards on February 22.
Hollywood royalty will be taking to the red carpet to celebrate the best in the film industry over the past year and our very own London stars will be hoping for Oscar success.
