A Lambeth filmmaker is visiting his late father’s birthplace to film a documentary about the island of Dominica.

Richard Etienne, of Vassall Road, is travelling to the Carribean island for the first time, where he will document his personal discovery of the land, culture and people.

The film, titled Id – my Doiminica Story, is set to be released next summer, which coincides with the 10 year anniversary of his father’s death.

“I was very close with my father,” said Richard.

“He was my best friend, my idol and someone who believed in me unconditionally.

“This film will document my virgin journey to the Carribean island of Dominica as I retrace my father’s steps to discover inspiring home truths.”

The project will feature some of the island’s biggest celebrities including cricketer Shane Shillingford, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Miss Dominica 2013, designer of the national flag Dr Alwin Bully and celebrated historian Dr Lennox Honychurch.

“This film will discover the REAL Dominica and the people who create the culture of this beautiful island as I go about putting a small, uncelebrated country, firmly on the map,” he said.

The project is being funded by public donations and Richard is asking for assistance to help him raise the £5,000 he needs to get the film underway.

Most of the money will go towards film equipment and transportation – as there are no direct flights from the UK the team will fly to nearby Barbados and get a charter flight across to the island.

“My hope is that the documentary will educate and inspire young people to do something similar, whilst maintaining a cross-generational appeal,” he said.
