Two Croydon footballers charged with match-fixing allegations and due to appear in court on December 11 were dismissed by their club today.

Michael Boateng and Hakeen Adelakun, both 22, play for Brighton-based Conference South team Whitehawk FC, but come from Croydon.

Club Director Mark Turner said: “The board are disappointed by these allegations and have taken steps to protect the club.”

Boateng and Adelakun are the third and fourth people to be charged as part of a major investigation into match fixing by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

They are charged with conspiring together with two other footballers, Chann Sankaran and Krishna Ganeshan to “defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of football matches and placing bets thereon.”

An NCA spokesman said: “The Crown Prosecution Service’s Organised Crime Division found sufficient evidence and was satisfied it was in the public interest to authorise charges.”
