Corbyn labels Trump victory a ‘dark day’ for the planet

Jeremy Corbyn has labelled Donald Trump’s historical victory in the US presidential election a ‘dark day’ for the planet.

The Republican party leader won a second term on Wednesday, after beating out his opponent Kamala Harris in an unexpected landlside of votes in key states.

The former Labour party leader took to X (formally Twitter) to slam the President-elect for his stance on abortion rights, immigration, climate change and the conflict in the Middle East.

He posted on X: “The election of Donald Trump is a dark day for reproductive healthcare, the rights of refugees and the future of our planet”.

The Independent MP for Islington North has previously been critical of Trump, notably after the 2016 election, where he gave a speech labelling Trump as a rich, white man.

He said: “The fake anti-elitism of rich, white men, like Nigel Farage and Donald Trump, is farcical at one level but in reality, it’s no joke at all.”

In previous comments, he also critised the decision to allow Donald Trump’s state visit.

“Donald Trump should not be coming to the UK…[Britain’s government] should be challenging Trump on international law issues and we should not be rolling the red carpet out.”

In his comments on X, Corbyn referenced the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, referencing ‘slaughter’ in Gaza and Lebanon, and repeated calls to governments to “stop enabling genocide and end all arms sales to Israel”.

He wrote: “We are a global movement, made up of all faiths and backgrounds, united in our opposition to racism and hatred.

“We will never abandon hope in a more equal, sustainable and peaceful world.”

Corbyn served as the Labour leader from 2015 to 2020, where he lost to Boris Johnson, and was subsequently replaced as leader by now-Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer.
