In the heart of Hammersmith people flocked to the aptly named King Street Coronation Party to celebrate this iconic day in British history.
Despite the rain, locals of all ages ventured out to watch the moment King Charles III was crowned on the big screen in Lyric Square along with entertainment from a stilt-walking Queen Victoria, a royal scavenger hunt and live music.
Hope Pacman, 27, Hammersmith resident said: “The weather couldn’t stop us, it’s a brilliant community feel. It’s nice to celebrate as a community.”
Business owners were out in force heading up stalls adorned with British flag themed bunting and selling anything from homemade gifts, to cakes of every kind.
Georgia McPhee, 28, owner of None of Your Beeswax said: “Despite the weather everyone’s in great spirits, there’s so many more people than I thought there was going to be.”
Live music was on offer at both ends of the street with a genre to suit everyone including part-time busker Clarissa May who is a part of the street performance programme Busk in London.
Several local residents at today’s street party had recently moved to London and were excited to witness the pomp and ceremony Britain is so iconic for on a day like today.
Parents Michelle, 34, and Derick Drayer, 38, moved to Shepherd’s Bush from the States in August last year.
Michelle said: “It’s been a historic time period to be here. We didn’t want to go all the way down to Hyde Park so we appreciated that this was something local that we could do.”
Their friend Lauren Chanley, 33, had come to visit from Chicago Illinois and could not believe how grand the celebrations were compared to the American inaugurations that take place every four years.
