A huge victory has been won by Labour’s Mike Brunt in the Figge’s Marsh ward by-election, the former leader of Merton Council received 2,824 votes, a majority of 2,381.
His closest rival was Conservative Hamna Qureshi with 443, while UKIP’s Andrew Thomas Mills came third with 254.
The seat has been vacant since the resignation of Labour councillor Peter Walker on March 2 in protest to cuts in adult social care.
Mike Brunt joins two other Labour colleagues Agatha Akyigyina and Geraldine Stanford as ward councillors.
Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh congratulated his ’emphatic’ win.
