Launched in 2007, Wimbledon’s 9-day Bookfest aims to spread a love of reading and writing, encourage community activity and fire local ambition. This year, alongside appearances by authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Salman Rushdie and Will Hutton at assorted local venues, there are plenty of activities for young people including workshops and play readings and storytelling.

Gareth Gates and Jennifer Ellison will be joining the cast as Warner and Paulette at the New Wimbledon Theatre from Tuesday 25 September to Saturday 6 October. Elle Woods can handle anything. With some help from new-found friends Paulette, Emmett and her chihuahua Bruiser, she learns that it’s so much better to be smart. A chance for adults to enjoy the pond safaris normally reserved for children, Barnes Wetland Centre is offering the opportunity track some of the more mysterious freshwater wildlife. A team of experts will be on hand to tell you about the habitats and behaviours of your discoveries.

Sivananda Yoga are offering intermediate yoga classes at a reduced price. The centre is run by voluntary staff who hope to educate local residents about the physical and emotional benefits of regular yoga practice.

Feeling artistic? The Big Draw, organised by the nationwide Campaign for Drawing, aims to connect communities in creative ways. The temporary exhibition centre has been transformed into an undecorated Victorian parlour. Come along and help decorate the room with paintings, vases, plates and tiles.
